What is our Maths National Exam? (Juniors)

Description

The NextGen Olympiad Mathematics NationalExam is designed to challenge and inspire young mathematical minds through our prestigious international competition. Built on Australian curriculum standards, this exam offers students worldwide the opportunity to demonstrate their mathematical excellence and compete with peers globally.

Our Mathematics National Exam features 25 carefully crafted multiple-choice questions designed to test problem-solving skills, mathematical reasoning, and curriculum knowledge appropriate for each age group. Students have 50 minutes to complete the exam, with questions ranging from foundational concepts to challenging applications that encourage critical thinking.

Exam Format:

Scoring System:

  • 4 points for each correct answer
  • Maximum score: 100 points+-
  • -1 for every wrong answer

Global Round Qualification:

Anyone who scores 50% or above on the exam will qualify for our prestigious Global Round in Sydney, Australia (April 2026), featuring enhanced prizes, international recognition, and an unforgettable educational experience.

The Levels it’s broken into

There are three categories of participation for our Junior Mathematics National Exam:

  1. Category 1 – Ages 6-7 Years Old (Grade 1-2)
  2. Category 2 – Ages 8-9 Years Old (Grade 3-4)
  3. Category 3 – Ages 10-11 Years Old (Grade 5-6)

Each category is specifically designed with age-appropriate mathematical concepts while maintaining the challenge and excitement that makes our competition both educational and engaging. 

Year 1-2 (Level 1)

  1. Addition and Subtraction with 1- and 2-digit Numbers
  2. Comparing and Ordering Numbers up to 3 Digits
  3. Odd and Even Number
  4. Forming 2- and 3-digit Numbers Using Given Digits
  5. Place Value Reasoning (Units, Tens, Hundreds)
  6. Basic Number Patterns and Skip Counting (2s, 5s, 10s)
  7. Balance Problems and Missing Number Equations (e.g., 4 + □ = 9)
  8. Identifying and Counting 2D and 3D Shapes
  9. Counting Sides, Corners, and Faces in Geometric Figures
  10. Recognising and Sorting Shapes Based on Sides and Angles
  11. Understanding Area and Perimeter Using Informal Units
  12. Reading Time to the Hour and Half-Hour (Analog and Digital)
  13. Positional and Directional Language (e.g., above, beside, left, turn right)
  14. Interpreting Simple Graphs (Pictographs, Column Graphs)

Year 3-4 (Level 2)

  1. Addition and Subtraction with 2-digit and 3-digit Numbers
  2. Multiplication and Division Facts (up to 10×10 and related division)
  3. Sum, Difference, Product, and Multiples in Number Sentences
  4. Forming 3-digit Numbers from Given Digits
  5. Number Patterns and Sequences (Skip Counting, Repetition, Alternating)
  6. Even and Odd Number Properties, Doubling and Halving
  7. Place Value Reasoning with Thousands, Hundreds, Tens, and Units
  8. Counting and Identifying 2D and 3D Shapes
  9. Recognising and Naming Geometric Figures (Prisms, Pyramids, Circles, etc.)
  10. Counting Sides, Corners, Faces, and Interior Angles of Shapes
  11. Area and Perimeter of 2D Shapes and Nets of 3D Figures
  12. Basic Symmetry and Mirror Image Reasoning
  13. Simple Calendar, Date, and Age Problems (Time Passage, Duration)
  14. Reading Time to Minute, Converting Units of Time
  15. Simple Combinatorics and Grouping (How many ways? Basic Arrangements)
  16. Introduction to Factors and Multiples (including Common Multiples)
  17. Understanding and Solving Word Problems Using Logical Reasoning
  18. Data Interpretation from Simple Graphs (Tally, Bar, Picture Graphs)
  19. “Chicken and Rabbit Theorem” Style Problems (Heads and Legs Logic Puzzles)

Year 5-6 (Level 3)

  1. Operations with Periodic Number Sequences (e.g., sum of every third term)
  2. Balance and Equality Problems in Equations
  3. Fraction Operations (Addition, Subtraction, Simplification)
  4. Divisibility Rules (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10)
  5. LCM and HCF Concepts with Word Problems
  6. Area and Perimeter of 2D Figures and Surface Area/Volume of 3D Shapes
  7. Identifying, Classifying, and Naming Geometric Figures (2D and 3D)
  8. Understanding Angle Types and Measuring Angles in Geometric Shapes
  9. Number Patterns and Arithmetic Sequences
  10. Figure Patterns, Rotations, Reflections, and Transformations
  11. Speed, Time, and Distance Word Problems
  12. Time Calculations Involving Duration, Timetables, and Clocks
